Applying after-sun skincare

Top 4 After-sun Skincare Tips for Your Clients

As skincare providers, we are used to discussing the importance of SPF with all our clients. We suggest the best SPF products to use and remind them to reapply often! Sometimes in all this protective sunscreen talk we forget to follow up with how they can take care of their skin after sun exposure. Too much sun can lead to dry scaly patches and a sunburn. It can speed up aging and cause fine lines. Skin can feel dry and irritated – after-sun skincare helps to soothe and repair the skin. Take the time to explain the importance of after-sun skincare with your client at their next appointment. Below you will find helpful tips to offer your clients following their day out in the sun.

Cool Down & Deep Clean

A day of sun, saltwater, and chlorine can be very drying to the skin. Taking a cool shower after removes any leftover sunscreen and helps to cool the skin down. Removing sunscreen properly helps to get rid of trapped dirt in oil and have accumulated on the surface of the sunscreen throughout the day. Using an oil-based body cleanser can help break down sunscreen that has been reapplied multiple times. Remind your clients that properly removing the buildup of sunscreen will prevent clogged pores and breakouts.

Soothe inflamed and sensitive skin with a hydrating after sun lotion. An after-sun lotion is used to rejuvenate the skin after it has been stripped of its moisture from the sun. When suggesting an after-sun lotion or cream look for one that has antioxidants. Antioxidants help encourage DNA repair. Ultraceuticals Face and Body Recovery Cream was formulated to be used after a day in the sun and includes multiple antioxidants. This hydrating cream includes Soybean extract, Tasmanian Berry extract, and Vitamin E Phosphate to soothe dry skin. You will also find Allantoin, Shea Butter and Bisabolol which helps in hydrating the skin after being exposed to environmental stressors. Applying the cream immediately after showering will help replenish the skin. Recommend that your clients purchase their after-sun cream when purchasing their SPF products.

Hydrate! Yes, I know it might seem silly recommending your client drink water but it’s something commonly overlooked when it comes to skin health. It can take only 30 minutes of being in the sun for your body to start becoming dehydrated. After a day of sun exposure, the top layer of you skin barrier has become compromised and has lost moisture. Staying hydrated is the key to ultimate after-sun skincare and staying hydrated from within will work to repair the loss of moisture from the sun. Drink Up!

Finish off hydrating the skin with a hydrating mist! A hydrating facial mist is not only great to help cool down the skin from intense rays but will also help to add extra moisture. Ultraceuticals Hydrating Mist is alcohol free so its perfect for sensitive skin and paraben free. Containing the hydrating ingredients Panthenol, Betaine, and Sodium Hyaluronate. These ingredients nourish the skin lipid layer. A hydrating mist can be the fastest way to revitalize dull and tired skin from the sun. Spray on skin after the shower and before applying an after-sun cream.

What to Avoid

There are some things to avoid when it comes after-sun care also. Make sure your client knows to not use products that contain AHAs, Glycolic Acids, and Benzoyle Perioxide which can dehydrate the skin further. Scrubs should also not be used immediately after being in the sun. Skin will already be sensitized from the sun and a scrub can irritate the skin further. Also advise your client to stay away from products that have petrolatum which can trap the heat of a sunburn in your skin. Ouch!

Retail Tips
