Must-Have Ingredients For Client Skincare

The ABCs of Skincare

Need an easy way to teach your clients about the best skincare ingredients? Remember the ABCs of skincare: vitamin A, vitamin B, and vitamin C.

A daily skincare routine is essential to achieve your best, healthiest skin. As estheticians, we understand the importance of these daily routines and it’s our job to help educate our clients and pack the best ingredients into a reasonable and achievable routine. The ideal scenario for a client includes a morning and nighttime routine.

As far as how many products and what to use, it can be overwhelming for some clients, especially with all the different skin care ads, social media trends, and advice out on the market – that’s why their esthetician is there to streamline and simplify the process for them.

With over 15 years of experience working on different skin types, I have learned that there are three essential ingredients to include in your client’s daily skincare routine; I never send my clients off without the three ABCs of skincare.

The ABCs of Skincare

The easiest way to explain what to use in a daily skincare routine is to remember the ABCs of skincare: vitamin A, vitamin B, and vitamin C. These three ingredients will help to build the skin’s barrier function and repair and protect it as well. Let’s take a look at each ingredient in more detail:

A = Vitamin A

The “A” in the ABCs of skincare stands for vitamin A (retinol). Retinol is the holy grail when it comes to anti-aging skin care. No cosmetic ingredient has been scientifically proven to be more effective for improving the signs of premature aging.

Some of the many benefits of retinol include: refining surface texture by regulating skin cell turnover, brightening the complexion by removing surface pigment, plumping the dermal matrix by stimulating hyaluronic acid production, and refining and improving epidermal and dermal density. With all these amazing benefits to the skin, it sounds too good to be true, and here is the catch: retinol is a highly unstable ingredient in its purest form, so it needs to be stabilized to effectively be delivered into the skin to work its magic.

The Ultraceuticals Ultra A range is a great option for working retinol into your client’s daily routine. There are three products in the range: the Ultra A Mild, Ultra A Serum, and Ultra A Intense Booster. The beauty of these serums is that you start on the mild and work your client’s way up in intensity so that your skin acclimates to the retinol to not cause inflammation or redness. Ultraceuticals is known for a progressive, not aggressive approach to the skin.

The other reason why the Ultra A range is so great is because of the delivery system of vitamin A. Highly researched and panel tested, this system uses a soft wax base to encapsulate pure vitamin A with potent antioxidants and hyaluronic acid to not only address fine lines and wrinkles but also treat and soothe the skin. The Ultra A serum should be used at nighttime as a repair product, before the last step of your moisturizer.

B = Vitamin B

The “B” in the ABCs of skincare stands for vitamin B. Vitamin B comes in a few forms—here I am focusing on vitamin B3, also called niacinamide. This unicorn of an ingredient works as a catalyst for other ingredients in a formula to amplify the benefits of that formula to the skin.

For example, when niacinamide is combined with a hyaluronic acid, it will amplify the benefits of hydration to the skin. Some of the many benefits of niacinamide include: improving the barrier function of the skin, reducing oil production, and improving the appearance of photo-aging of the skin (which includes improving hyperpigmentation, redness, and wrinkles).

You can find niacinamide throughout the Ultraceuticals line, but I want to especially highlight the Ultra B2 Hydrating Serum as a fantastic option to include in your client’s daily routine. This serum includes both niacinamide B3 and panthenol B5, which is a form of vitamin B that acts to both increase hydration and
support the barrier function of the skin. Hyaluronic acid is also in the serum, and so I like to say it is a hyaluronic acid serum on steroids.

The Ultra B2 Hydrating Serum can be used on its own as a moisturizer or can be used as a “hydration booster” to use prior to your client’s nightly moisturizer.

C = Vitamin C

And finally, the “C” in the ABCs of skincare stands for vitamin C. Also known as ascorbic acid, vitamin C has a wide range of benefits in skincare, including anti-aging, improving hyperpigmentation, antioxidants, and protection from free radical damage from the elements. There are 3 Cs that vitamin C helps with: collagen production, strengthening capillary function, and skin ceramide production. These benefits have a smoothing and firming effect, while also strengthening and protecting the skin.

If these amazing benefits haven’t sold you on why vitamin C should be an essential part of your daily skincare routine, maybe this fun fact will: you lose 1% of collagen every year after you turn 30! Yikes. As with vitamin A, vitamin C is also highly unstable, so it can cause chaos on the skin in the wrong formulation.

The Ultraceuticals Ultra C range is a great option to give your clients a daily dose of vitamin C at home. Depending on your client’s skin type, there are 2 options: Ultra C23+ Firming Concentrate and Ultra C Firming Serum. The Ultra C23+ Firming Concentrate is great for dry skin types, and the Ultra C Firming Serum is great for more oil-rich skin types.

Ultraceuticals has a unique delivery system in each, also thoroughly researched and tested to prove it works. Also in each of these serums are micro collagen and micro elastin (registered to Ultraceuticals, an ingredient that mimics the elastin fiber in the skin). This allows for this serum to be amplified in the benefits of firming and anti-aging. The Ultra C serum should be used in the morning, just before your client’s morning moisturizer and SPF protection.
