How To Prepare Your Skin For Winter

Chilly season is here! With the winter season coming our way, we can find ourselves staying inside, turning up the heat and making some hot cocoa. With this shift in the season, our skin tends to react. You may realize your skin becoming more dry and even flakey. This is normally due to the sudden increase in temperature in your home from turning on your heater, the cold dry air from outside and even the sudden hotter showers. All of these sudden changes in temperature can affect the dryness of your skin during this season. Having a strong, purposeful winter skincare routine is a must to keeping your skin barrier healthy and feeling healthy throughout this time of year, not to mention, you’ll look great for the holidays too!

Below we’re breaking down steps you can take for making your skin the best it can be during the winter season!

1. Hydrate:

Start your routine off strong by using a mild hydrating cleanser to wash your face. We recommend switching to a creamy cleanser like our Ultraceuticals Milk Cleanser that will cleanser your skin gently without stripping your natural oils away that are so necessary during the colder months.

2. Vitamin B2:

Add our Ultraceuticals B2 Hydrating Serum to your daily routine. This serum is packed with hyaluronic acid and niacinamide. It will help your skin staying hydrated and protect from trans-epidermal water loss which is common due to heaters in our homes and drier air conditions. Use this serum morning and night to keep your skin plumped and youthful.

3. Rich Moisture:

Use a richer moisturizer during the winter months. We recommend incorporating our Ultra Rich Moisturizer into your routine. This moisturizer is loaded with ceramides that keep your skin barrier healthy. Its unique formula mimics your natural skin composition to bring about your best glow and make your skin feel its best. Ditch oil free moisturizers during this time of year, your skin will thank you!

4. Antiox & SPF:

Don’t forget to use antioxidants and SPF daily! Antioxidants not only help fight against environmental damage, but they also boost your SPF protection to keep your skin from the harmful UV radiation. We often forget that the sun is harmful to the skin no matter if it is sunny outside or not. Snow reflects the sun and causes deeper damage than we can imagine, so wearing a layer of protective antioxidants and a good coat of mineral SPF is a must no matter the season. We recommend using our Ultra Protective Antioxidant Complex over your moisturizer followed by our Ultra UV Protective Mineral Defense SPF 50+. Our unique formulation of antioxidants combines Vitamin C and Ferulic Acid to boost your SPF throughout the day and protect your skin from environmental damage. This is our favorite product from Ultraceuticals! Give it a try and let us know how you love it.

5. Drink Up

Drink at least one and a half liters of water every day. Hydration starts from within, so boosting your water habits are always a good thing! Ditch caffeinated drinks that further dehydrate your skin and switch to a non-caffeinated tea. With just a few simple lifestyle changes you’ll see your skin change to its best version all season long.

6. Eat Mindfully

Diet is everything! And we don’t mean the strict, non indulgent diet – we just mean incorporating a balanced diet full of vegetables, fruits, and fiber. By adding a diet rich in antioxidants, you are also helping your skin feel and look its best. Ditch high processed foods, fatty foods, and sugar – or indulge in them from time to time. Balance is key! These foods cause glycation of the skin which equals faster aging! Do your best to incorporate a diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods and see your skin improve no matter the weather outside.

7. Stay Active

During cold months we all want to hibernate, we get it! But staying active keeps the blood flowing and oxygenated which in turn gives you a better complexion. Having good circulation from staying active also helps with nutrient delivery all around your organs and guess what? Your skin is the largest organ of the body! So, stay active to increase your circulation and oxygenation and the results? Glow, glow and glow!
